The red cable car to Lomnický štít hanging above a rocky cirque

Tatranská Lomnica & Lomnický Štít

A cable car to 2,634 m

Tatranská Lomnica, at the eastern end of the railway, is the third of the big Tatra resorts and the gateway to Lomnický štít (2,634 m). A chain of lifts — gondola, then a small cable car — raises you almost 1,800 vertical metres to Slovakia’s second-highest summit.

The cable car to the top was completed in 1941 and remains one of the most dramatic rides in Europe. Because the cabin is small, places are limited and sell out in summer.

What to see and do: Tatranská Lomnica & Lomnický Štít

Gondola to Skalnaté pleso

Modern gondolas climb via the Štart mid-station to Skalnaté pleso at 1,751 m, where there is an astronomical observatory, a restaurant and a short loop walk around the tarn.

Cable car to Lomnický štít

From Skalnaté pleso the red cabin swings up to the summit in under ten minutes. Visits are timed — typically around 50 minutes on top, with a café and viewing terraces. Tickets are dated and timed, cost considerably more than other lifts and should be bought online days ahead; flights are cancelled in high wind.

Chairlift to Lomnické sedlo

A chairlift runs from Skalnaté pleso to the saddle at about 2,190 m — a cheaper high-altitude alternative, and in winter the top of Slovakia’s longest ski run.

Walk the magistrála

From Skalnaté pleso the red trail leads in about an hour to Zamkovského chata and on to Hrebienok — a splendid, mostly downhill traverse linking the two resorts.

Museum and botanical garden

In the village, the TANAP museum explains the park’s nature and history, and a small botanical garden displays Tatra flora in summer.
